Quantum Releasing acquires an unexpected, out of the ordinary film “Who is KK Downey?”
LOS ANGELES, CA (April 20, 2009) – International sales agent Quantum Releasing acquires an original, offbeat Canadian film titled “Who is KK Downey?” just in time for Cannes. A deal was signed between Kidnapper Films (a sketch comedy troop) and Quantum Releasing last week.
Quantum has big plans in store for this “touching, hilarious, and vulgar” (Film Threat) movie, which has been igniting interest at festivals around the world. ‘KK Downey’ has won awards at Boston Underground Film Festival (Massachusetts), Cinequest Film Festival (California), Mauvais Genre Film Festival (France).
‘KK Downey’ now heads to Cannes – Screening at the Marche du Film on Thursday, May 14, 2009 at 20:00 in Palais B.
“Cannes is the perfect place to premiere such a film. Who is KK Downey? targets the young counter-culture generation with its extreme style and outrageous dialogue. It is something new and something fresh that is sure to become another cult classic,” stated Jamie R Thompson, President of Quantum Releasing.
After two and a half years of writing, shooting, and editing, ‘KK Downey” is ready to take on the world. Darren Curtis, Pat Kiely, and Matt Silver, members of a sketch comedy collective – Kidnapper Comedy, each played a creative role in telling the KK Downey story, which was inspired by an unusual, contrived persona. “After James Frey, JT Leroy, and all those other hoaxes, we thought ‘why not make a really dumb, fun comedy about literary hoaxes.’ So that’s what we did,” laughed Director Darren Curtis.
Written by the three, directed by Curtis and Kiely, and produced by Kieran Crilly, Curtis, Kiely, and Brandi-Ann Milbradt (IFC’s “the Business” starring Kathleen Robertson, “Hatley High” starring Rachell Lefevre of Twighlight and New Moon, “Prom Wars” starring Alia Shawkat), ‘KK Downey’ is a about two perennial losers who want more than anything to be famous.
Theo and Terrence are best buddies, twenty-something scenesters with big ambitions. Theo’s invested three years in his first novel “Truck Stop Hustler,” the hair-raising, drug-soaked tale of a male prostitute. Terrence is a sociopathic slob with delusions of grandeur, dreams of rock ‘n’ roll superstardom with all the hedonism and hero worship that entails. But the cards aren’t in their favor. Their band can’t draw flies, and the girl Terrence loves has been stolen from him by an obnoxious music journalist with an ego bigger even than his own. Meanwhile, Theo’s book is rejected by a slimy publisher. Nobody, he claims, wants to hear that story from a soft, pampered suburban white boy. In a flash of desperate, dead-end inspiration, Terrence proposes a wild plan. He himself will publicly play the role of Theo’s character, K.K. Downey. The success and celebrity they crave awaits the pair, but so do terrible secrets that threaten to destroy their friendship–and worse.
The cast includes Darren Curtis, Kristin Adam (Where the Truth Lies), Pat Kiely, Dan Haber, Matt Silver, Brent Skagford, and Paul Spence (It’s All Gone Pete Tong). The trailer and additional credits can be found on the website at www.whoiskkdowney.com.

About Kidnapper Films
…is a production company based out of Montreal. Independent, underground, and highly coveted, its DIY force has matured over the past five years, resulting in what may very well be the next wave of comedy filmmaking. Combining the energy of improv sketch comedy with the production value of a Hollywood feature, the members of Kidnapper have proven themselves to be capable of combining the lows of fart humor with the highs of “Death in Venice”. With razor sharp incisors, the collective is bent on developing a new comedy language, one that is as dependent on the craft of traditional filmmaking as it is on whip smart writing and performing. Obsessive about their material, the members of the Kidnapper crew are constantly challenging themselves with new forms of writing, acting, and producing, each with a personal filter that results in a unique voice and vision. In a word, Kidnapper Films is just what you were waiting for: it is a new reference point for a new kind of comedy.
